My parents considered the VV "pornographic" at best, and a highly suspect publication at worst.
Still it was one of the best resources back in the day for finding an apartment (you went down to the Village to VV's offices to get the paper late Tuesday night/early Wednesday morning to get a jump on listings). The VV also covered the arts, music, entertainment and jazz scene of the Village and other areas better than many other local NYC papers of the time.
They've been going downhill for decades, but totally lost all relevance when they fired food critic Robert Sietsema a couple of years ago.
Dead rag walking at that point.
Yes, the VV has been coasting on fumes for a few decades now. Things really went downhill when they started with those escort/prossie adverts. Put Al Goldstein in the poor house and his Screw Magazine empire out of business. However afterwards the link between sex worker and VV became such you didn't want to be seen reading or even reaching for the paper in public.
Really sorry to hear this. They were important in their heyday. Nat Hentoff was a respected voice, Andrew Sarris was one of the most famous film critics in the country, and I gather the VV did good local political stories.
Sad these youngings will never know the village voice....
RIP How would I ever have found apts back in the 90's....I remember grabbing it first thing Wednesday mornings to get a jump on it before everyone else.
I can't understand why this paper still around they got rid of so many good
journalist that been there for years and yet keep people like talcum x Shaun King !!
