Crazy after 5 years a Garbage Man makes more than a Cop or a Teacher with a Masters Degree.

Maybe a teacher, but not NYPD, unless the officer isn't doing something right.

In either case both NYPD and DSNY earn much of that extra money in OT; something teachers do not get.

NYPD knows the deal; between well timed arrests, security duty and so forth, it isn't difficult to pick-up some OT. Peeps were laughing all the way to bank with all that nonsense over DT and the 57th and Fifth area lock down.

They won't be making more than a cop. Or at least a cop who has a good relationship with his CO and can get some OT shifts.

San men/women will make more than teachers after 5 years but the big perk with teachers is the summer vacation/set days off. There are 180 school days. Plenty of teachers tutor on the side and/or teach summer school (if they can get it).

A colleague of mine has a son-in-law who is 2 years in. Plenty of OT even at this junior level.

A well timed arrest nets a minimum of 4 extra hours I believe?

Not sure of exact length of time, but an arrest done in the last our or so of duty can and likely will stretch out several hours. Am guessing much depends upon how long processing takes which in turn is affected by how busy things are in CP.

Some of the other "extra" work has dried up when the city raised the rates they charged for NYPD protection. You notice TD Bank now has "rent a cops" instead of NYPD at their branches. That Commerce (later TD Bank) duty was nice bit of easy OT.

City has been reining in OT for DSNY for some time it seems. Know for years now when regular collection day falls on a legal holiday Sanitation no longer sends out trucks starting 12:01 the next day; trash remains until the next regularly scheduled collection. Maybe guys can get some extra work then, I don't know.

Our trash was supposed to be collected Monday (Columbus Day) and it wasn't picked up until around 9PM tonight.

DSNY rakes it in during snow storms. Sadly for them New York City winters aren't what they once were.

I was about to say, did you forget snow storms or the threat of a storm? lol Also, since their routes are fixed, they're done when they're done.

Either way sanitation is a tough job physically (those that actually collect garbage, not the ticketing or driving that stupid street cleaning truck) and more dangerous than being a cop.

I’ll add EMS to the list which was left out:

EMTs start at $33K and go up to $47K after 5 years

Paramedics start at $45K and go up to $61K after 5 years.

Pretty ****ty pay especially compared to cops and firefighters but the $61K is decent NYC middle class at least.

Know of more than a few EMT/Paramedics who went into nursing. A new grad RN in NYC *starts* at middle seventies and goes up to nearly ninety-two. Seasoned nurses earn more, especially if they pick up some OT, which many do.
