Yeah that’s his point. They know Hoboken and JC, claim those two are “more NYC than Stayen Island, and then knock the rest of NJ which they’ve never seen.
As per usual for this group, think many posting negative remarks about NJ either have not ever been to the place, and or are only familiar with the more urban areas near the Hudson River, NYC.
That is a shame because NJ is a huge state with quite a lot to offer. Coming from Staten Island can now and always have seen the attraction; it reminds me of home. That is what SI was like before it became increasingly urban.
Indeed that last bit is why many have been moving off SI for decades to parts of NJ, though now you are seeing movement to North Carolina as well.

No it wasn't, he said that the people who look down on NJ have only been to the urban areas if at all.
My opinion, it doesn't matter what reputation a place has, if you like it you like it.

Know Hoboken, JC, Newark, Weehawken and so forth from the 1980's or slightly before; and thus am not impressed when anyone says they are "more NYC" than any place across the water. This may or may not be true today, but as for in the past.....

Peeps have been leaving SI for NJ going back to the 1980's if not before. The numbers *may* have accelerated over past decade or so but never the less. Pick a place: Middletown, Old Bridge, Matawan, Colts Neck, Manalapan, Marlboro, etc... all over Jersey Shore/South Jersey and you'll find plenty of former Staten Islanders.
NJ a hipster desitination? I can't see that ever....well maybe Newark and Hoboken which is already pricey
