What does the term "Open Bar" generally mean to New Yorkers,
1. There is a bar that serves drinks to those attending for free.
2. There is a bar where you can buy drinks.

I have seen it mean either. In one case I am pleased, in the other not so much.

Free open bar or a price for like 2-3 hours of open bar.

I always ask "how much" if I am being invited to an open bar - I never assume it's free. lol

Always 1. Inhave never heard the term used for 2. Maybe someone might construct a sentence as a responde to someone who is askingn if a bar is open for business, but not as a distinct term if its own.

Open bar means drinks at an event are free. Cash bar means drinks at the event are not free.

^This. Open Bar usually means "free". We got an invitation to a wedding and it specifically said "cash bar".
