I've always had the impression that it was never a big thing, no rabid rivalries, etc., unlike that in other parts of the country, e.g., Texas towns where it's almost a religion and "services" are held on Friday nights. Is that true and has it always been that way?

And while we're at it, what about other HS sports, like baseball, hoops, and soccer.

There are big games on Staten Island and the Curtis / New Dorp game used to be a big deal when I was young but nothing like down south.

While their rivalry with some schools. Truman has rivalry with Evander. In the Bronx its Clinton vs Kennedy. Staten island is notorious for Curtis and Wagner. Staten Island has some of the best teams in the city.

Football is a country sport. We don't care about country sports here. The big sports for playing are handball and basketball.

nyc board of ed are a bunch of cheap skates when it comes to high school athletics. The private Catholic high schools have their teams, and competition. Basket Ball, yes, in the gymnasium or auditoriums, Hand Ball, track, bowling, but not much else.

Its not like other states, with an actual school built with a field attached. Even NJ has them!

Nyc is not a football city except for the pros. Basketball is the most popular local sport while baseball and basketball is popular for little league to high school levels. Football at the high school level is popular outside of NYC.

Football, at least the way it is played now, is on its way out. There was a recent medical study where they found that 99% of former football players studied had CTE. Once the legislators catch on, this will not be pretty.

Why the hell would you subject your kid to permanent brain damage is beyond me.

NYC will never produce the next NFL superstar or Heisman Trophy winner. There are far more NFL players coming from NJ because Rutgers has an established NCAA program and multiple NJ HS have big football fields for development. There's no room in NYC for football fields, very few schools have them the ones that have them are well to do areas. Football players typically come from poor neighborhoods.

For Football, NYC has lack of space for fields. NJ, LI, suburbs have better football. Jabrill Peppers is from NJ. Two of Bama's star DBs Minkah Fitzpatrick, and Anthony Averett are from NJ. David Njoku was last first round pick last draft and is from NJ.

Basketball is much bigger in NYC, but even that is dying as NYC has not produce top end talent in a long time.
