The head of the nation's largest school district is stepping down, city government sources tell News 4 New York.
New York City Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña plans to announce her departure from the city Department of Education after four years on the job on Thursday, according to the sources.
Fariña, 74, will leave the post after four years overseeing the school system that educates more than 1 million students a year and implementing several of Mayor de Blasio's educational policies and campaign promises, including universal pre-K for city kids.

Her departure is not a surprise to City Hall: Fariña had planned on retiring to Florida in 2013 but was coaxed into taking on the role by the then-newly elected mayor. City government sources said the mayor's office is already conducting a nationwide search for Fariña's replacement.

She is already making at least 10x what she would as chancellor so I don't think she'd accept.
Besides, she doesn't even run the best charter schools. She's just got a big mouth, good connections and pr.

She's getting out while the getting is good. With a nice fat pension and yes, likely still will be heading to Florida. There Ms. Farina will find plenty of company with other New York civil servants with nice fat pensions.

Sounds exactly the typical creme de la creme of MBAs running the biggest companies in the most powerful country on earth. You hit the nail dead center when you said she doesn't run the best charter schools (which nobody outside the industry would know without doing extensive time consuming research) yet she's literally the first person that pops up on everyone's mind when it comes to charter school leadership. What most would consider to be supreme leadership skills definitely has allowed her to punch above her weight.

Her place in NY has likely been paid for. She has no need to go Florida. As a retiree she can still probably get paid for consulting in NY. Moving to Florida is for lower level civil servants. She’s top level administration.
