It’s like with any endurance event like ice climbing or marathons—I don’r generally do them, but it’s interesting that people put themselves through it and it’s a fairly unique event. Pretty good money influx for NYC though, ain’t it?

There wasn't any live entertainment back in the day but lots of drugs and liquor, so I've heard from those who went. I was just a school kid. They didn't check the bags like they do now.

Went once or twice in the late '80s. This was before they want overt the top nuts with the security.

Showed up around 11. wandered out onto either Bway or 7th (forgot which, it's been a while) in the mid-40s. Stood there waiting. This was before they had lead up entertainment. Everyone was drinking. Watched a few fights roll by. Did the countdown, watched the ball drop. Turned around, watched the fireworks. Walked out and went home. Not complicated or problematic.

This year? Left at 11:30 to go into the park for the fireworks. Got to my desired viewing spot at 11:56. Watched fireworks. Saw the lead runners of the Midnight Run run by. Went home.

Yes it was pre 9/11. I did it a bunch of times in the early to mid 90's and it was a blast. Lots of drunks, lots of chaos, lots of fun. I don't think I'd ever do it again.
