A friend and myself are looking to live in NYC for a few months. Both of us are white Belgians, I’m a 23 year old girl and he’s a 26 year old guy. Our internships are in Midtown but rents in the area are very steep, so we looked elsewhere.
We found a good apartment in Harlem, on West 145th and Adam Clayton Powell Jr blvd. I was wondering how safe this area is?
I hear/read a lot of different things about Harlem in general and this area in particular. Some crime/safety maps show it as relatively safe, while others mark it as a red zone. Some personal testimonies say it’s perfectly fine while others do not recommend living there, so my research hasn’t really gotten me anywhere.
Our internships have normal daytime job working hours, although chances are we’d like to go out at night from time to time.
Neither of us are racist so the simple fact that people of color live in this area really isn’t an issue, I’m also not the kind of person who assumes that a lot of black people or latinos living in a certain area must mean it’s unsafe. I’m asking for genuine opinions and experiences from people who know the area.
lol! Europeans are a trip. They are certainly not in favor of "integration", as much as they may claim that they aren't racist, etc.
I’m really sorry if I came off a certain way. I was just trying to clarify that it isn’t an issue for me, as I know there are a lot of people that assume POC = crime, and I’m not one of those people. However I’m very unfamiliar with the area and I’ve heard a lot of contradicting stories about it, so I’m just trying to get a better idea here. Sorry if it came off as rude.
I guarantee you that if you are out walking late at night and get surrounded by a group of black guys you'd think "POC = crime". Europeans are so naive and so blind to it, too.

I can see I struck a nerve here and that I clearly picked my words wrong. My mistake, I’m sorry. I’m aware that I’m naive and largely ignorant towards the issue, I mean, I’m not from there and don’t know about the area or its potential issues. That’s why I made this post, but clearly I went about it very badly, and I’m sorry for that.
