Does anyone know what year W 46th street between 8th and 9th Avenues got the Restaurant Row moniker? Was it within the past 30 years?
The other thing is that I was walking on the block today and contrasted it with articles i have read from 20 years ago which spoke of restaurant owners losing business due to crack addicts, muggers and prostititutes infesting the block and the Guardian Angels(their headquarters were at 301 W) detaining these characters supposedly illegally.
Does anyone remember the block 20-30 years ago? Aside from the rif raf on the block, was the street as clean and sanitized as it appeared today? Were the restaurants still elegant looking despite the bad people hanging out? I've read stories about that corner being one of the worst. Other articles said 47th, 49th and 8th were infested, but I wonder, why 8th Avenue and not 7th? 7th was honky tonk and seedy but not like 8th? Why was this? What caused this? Thc losing of the old MSG in 1968?

my father used to own a restaurant on 9th and 52nd st. I used to go there all the time, the areas was not bad in the mid to late 90's and then I went away to college, and came back and realized the rest of manhattan was changing, but hell's kitchen was still relatively the same, and then after 3 or four more years of college it was different like it is now
I would say in 2004 it became restaurant row, or maybe even sooner, because I was higher up by a few blocks.
nah, W 46th street between 8th and 9th was Restaurant Row way before 2004, in the late 80's and before , and I am wondering the actual year it was named RR. Was it in the 60's, 70's?
It's actually on the fringe of the theater district and Hells Kitchen
The first time I heard the term "Restaurant Row" was during the Guardian Angels controversy. I'd worked for the City from 1974-78, was involved in a lot of the public relations efforts on the city's behalf, and I don't remember hearing anything about Restaurant Row then.
By the mid-'90s, the neighborhood it was cleaning up nicely, in stark contrast to its mid-'70s character. But I don't think even the very low 50s (streets) were as bad as the mid 40s (streets) at their lowest point in the '70s (years).
That particular area has been called restaurant's row for a while. I don't know the exact history but it doesn't have to do with the gentrification of the area.
Like much of the rest of the city, it was much worse in the 70's/80's.
