Dear New Yorkers,
I have lost several library items on a subway in a green bag. What are the odds that it will be returned? Have you ever lost something on a bus or train and got it back?

Google it and follow the MTA's instructions. It all depends on if someone turned your items in.

My husband's co-worker left a piece of luggage on the train and he got it back.

Contact them and see if they have it.

I was with a family member who was carrying an overnight bag for me several years ago and he left it on a F train in Manhattan (but going in the direction of Brooklyn). I was told at the time to go immediately to the end of the line in Coney Island to see if I can retrieve the bag from the cleaners at the end of line before it was sent to Lost & Found. Luckily, when I got to Coney Island one of the train cleaners had found my bag and I was able to get it on the spot.

Yes, actually my wallet. Someone saw when it fell out of my bag (on the train) and gave it to a police officer at the same station that I exited. Fortunately they were able to call me and I met the officer, verified what was in my wallet and the amount my last bank transaction (I'd taken $$ out of one my accounts 30 minutes before and the receipt was in my wallet).

Wow, so there are nice New Yorkers out there. I'm not waiting with bated breath. I already told the library to hit me with the fees. That's $120 I'll never get back. Thanks for sharing your experiences. It makes New York a friendlier place. For what it's worth, I have returned several wallets and notified several people about their open bags.
Here's to hoping that someone returned the items. Crossing fingers!
I went to the lost and found. Apparently, it takes 2-3 weeks for them to return any item and they have thousands of items. It's at 34th Street in this really non descript gray place.

When I first moved to Queens, I mistakenly returned a Manhattan library book to the Queens library (actually I thought it was all one NYC system). When I was told by Manhattan library that my book was overdue, I explained what happened, and hoped that a book returned to the Queens library would be sent over to a Manhattan branch, but that never happened. $25 fine for one book --- that was IN the library, just the wrong one. So I feel your pain.

Just hope that if your good samaritan returns your books to the library, that they bring them to the right system.

I also know someone who once found a looseleaf binder that someone left at subway station. Since it did have contact information on or in it, the person able to contact the woman who lost it and she came to pick it from him.

Also in the mid-1990s my visiting mother was pickpocketed (someone stole her fanny pack from her open oversized handbag) in Times Square before an evening Broadway show. The following week I came home from work to find a message on my answering machine from someone who was working at the Times Square TKTS booth saying he found under a city bus seat her fanny pack. The guy found me as her documents were all there together with an addressbook which my address in it. So my mother got all her important documents and credit cards back. The only thing missing was a $50 as I guess the thief was only interested in cash.
