I don't think I've ever been denied restroom access in NYC at any restaurant or hotel. I've been told once at Burger King that they only open up for customers but I said I was going to buy something. Starbucks has never denied me access but usually there's always a line there since they are unisex and I hate unisex restrooms at places like Shake Shack and Starbucks where I just need 2 mins while someone is in there for over 30mins.
Of course there are public restrooms throughout the city like at Penn Station where I have to hold my breath inside because so many homeless people inside.
So sometimes I think it's necessary for businesses to deny bathroom to certain non-customers. The Starbucks racial profiling issue was just overblown.
Many establishments require you to be a paying customer. Other places will say no altogether. Best to just go to the next establishment then argue with staff. If you end up having to pee behind the building, then let be. When cops come it is simply time to go.
NEVER! Never been denied restroom access in my entire life. In fact, most retail establishments offer me restroom usage. Do you think its cause I'm the other white meat?
Do you think what happened at Starbucks had to do with their appearance? Meaning their clothes? I have people confide in me and they've mentioned corn rolls and sweat pants have negative connotations and it makes them feel uncomfortable. Maybe the 2 guys said something to the manager that made him/her feel uncomfortable? We'll just never know.
Nope, but I've never asked to use the bathroom at a place I didn't order something at
I never asked to use a bathroom at a place I didn't order something in Manhattan where there plenty of free bathrooms that one can access (hotel lobbies, library branches, Penn Station, the Staten Island Ferry Terminal, Washington Square Park, the Manhattan Mall, some stores like Uniqlo, etc.).

If someone feels uncomfortable because of someone's hair or clothes that person is an idiot and does not deserve to be working in any job facing the public. One is not required to straighten one's hair or wear a suit just to enter a Starbucks. The manager was rightfully fired.
If you're such a coward everything frightens you, that's your problem and you need to stay home.
