Just curious, I was looking at some old television schedules in New York City, and I was wondering when did WABC, WCBS, and WNBC reduce their 6:00 PM newscasts to a half-hour and then ABC World News Tonight, CBS Evening News, and NBC Nightly News at 6:30 PM?
Thanks!
Sean
Right, probably 25 years anyway . Before that local network news was always an hour from 6 to 7.
It had to be before Jeopardy was broadcast at 7pm because the network news used to be on in NYC at 7pm. I remember Jeopardy has been on at 7 since at least 1986.
In the 70s, Local news was always an hour. Network news (Uncle Walter, Huntley Brinkley, revolving ABC anchors) were 1/2 hour at 7.) At 7:30 you had the syndicated shows, In Search Of, Nighttime versions of Hollywood Squares, The Newlywed Game. In the 60s, 7:30 started "prime time," except there was no term "prime time." Stuff for the kiddies, such as Batman, would air at 7:30 on ABC.
If my memory serves correctly, in the early 1970s WNBC/Channel 4 expanded their newscast to two hours, beginning at 5:00 PM and featuring as anchors Chuck Scarborough and Carl Stokes (former mayor of Cleveland).
