Some local elected officials also offer free legal night. Try googling the names of your local politicians (city councilman, state senator, etc . For the district you live in ) Plus “free legal” or similar term and see what comes up.

Focus on getting yourself out of this precarious situation which involves improving your finances.

No one that lives in an illegally converted room is typically doing well. You should be posting for advice in the work and employment forum to figure out how you can get your income up or move elsewhere where you can have a better quality of life.

As long as you are living there, the landlord can still take you to court for non payment. You will now be in the system as a problem tenant. Good luck getting another apartment

You can google advice, people try to scam the system all the time. Most landlords know the game by now though so the gravy train has set sail a while ago.

Squatters rights don’t apply, you would also have to show the building owner is not involved with the building at all like not paying taxes and also prove that you invested money into improving the building as it is your own. Haven’t seen a building owners stupid enough to allow squatters to do all of that In years in nyc.
