Last night there was a re-run on channel 25 about several individuals that held on in the South Bronx when most of the borough was burning and made their community stronger and better. I've seen the episode before, but it was great to see it again considering all of the negativity that the place has been getting of late. Since the borough gets crapped on so much, I thought I'd start a thread about the GOOD things the borough possesses for a change. For example, Hunts Point houses the LARGEST wholesale food distribution in all of NYC.

The Hunts Point Food Distribution Center is home to The Chef's Warehouse and many other facilities.

The center generates billions of dollars in sales and is comprised of meat, produce and fish markets.

"Most of the food that's in your local supermarkets are in here and everywhere else," says Nikko Torres, an employee at The Chef's Warehouse.

Some other good things about the borough:

Home to:

-Pelham Bay Park in Pelham Bay (The largest public park in NYC. The park is more than three times the size of Manhattan's Central Park. The park is operated by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation (NYC Parks)).

-Botanical Garden (a 250-acre site with verdant landscape supports over one million living plants in extensive collections.)

-Van Cortlandt Park in Riverdale (The city's third largest park, only behind Central Park and Pelham Bay Park)

-Yankee Stadium

-The Bronx Zoo (it is the largest metropolitan zoo in the United States, and among the largest in the world)

-Arthur Avenue (the Little Italy of the Bronx)

-Wave Hill in Riverdale (a 28-acre estate overlooking the Hudson River - the former home of Mark Twain)

Please list some other good things about the borough, and if you have nothing positive to say, don't bother posting.

City Island has really good food and a nice quaint but rundown fishtown feel to it. Relaxing with $1 coffee at Lickity Split on an afternoon was absolutely pleasant. Hana is a good Puerto Rican x Japanese hibachi restaurant. Sammy's, while expensive, makes good food and I do thoroughly enjoy it.

Art Deco is also a beautiful style that abounds the Grand Concourse and other thoroughfares like Moshulu.

Really, if it weren't for the crime and if people took care of where they lived, more of the Bronx would be an amazing place to live.

I lived on Holland Avenue for a while and loved it. Especially during Christmas time. Great, cheap Italian food. Close to the zoo. Easy #2 train or express buses. ❤️

Funny thing is before that South Bronx episode came on, they did a special on City Island too. Apparently at one time it was extremely important for the entire city in terms of shipbuilding.

It is definitely a place with an old-time NYC feel. Most of Brooklyn has become too gentrified to give it that same feel.

-Lots of good architecture in the parts that survived the arson wave. The Grand Concourse, in particular
-Very dense (home to some of the most urban residential neighborhoods in the country)
-New breweries popping up
-Round Latina booty
-The borough as a whole is not particularly dangerous. If it were its own city, it would not have noteworthy crime statistics

Overall I'd say it's dense, but most of the good neighborhoods are not dense by NYC standards anyway.

It seems that Kingsbridge and Riverdale are getting a few new spots.

Kingsbridge:
Kingsbridge Social Club

Riverdale:
The Hill
Buunni Coffee

Yes, please because this is about the GOOD things of borough, not about dissing the Bronx. With that said, f you're in the place regularly, surely there must be something good you can say about it, not unless you only frequent the hood areas?

The best thing about the BX is what I call the “BX prices.” Especially in the grocery stores. CHEAP. People who reside in Manhattan would be in shock and awe.

The Art Deco buildings along Grand Concourse

Mexicocina
Golden Pizza on Brook
Western Beef
Foo Hing Chinese on 3rd Ave
Little Italy

That’s it

The boro ain’t sh**

Pierre. You don’t live there. You don’t know... if you did one year in the South Bronx, you’d be horrified
