Bonfire of the Vanities - the book, not the movie - was excellent & pretty much hit the nail on the head for NYC circa - what? - 1989 or so? 87-89 I would say.

Band: Carnivore, Type O Negative and Manowar
Movies: There are many. Seek out films like "The Naked City" and "Arsenic and Old Lace" - you'll see a lot of genuine NYC in them. "After Hours" is a good one, too. Recent films/TV shows... Seinfeld is pretty good for the NYC feel, but Law and Order - each flavor - is, IMO, the best. They're filmed here and the locations are easily recognizable.
Books: That's a tough one. You need visuals... History books are best, then. wait... after seeing NewYorkNative's post, I have to agree. Bonfire of the Vanities, book, not movie, hits accurately on the class division between civil servants and private sector professionals - a side note, but a good one. Plus, I think, it hit on neighborhoods/communities and how people here sure do seem to exploit all sorts of things.
