The spots I know are in Queens, not Brooklyn. Technically if a car is left on the street for more than a week or something like that it is legally considered abandoned and the city can tow it. But I can tell you that almost never happens, there are no specialized units looking out for these cars. The really long term ones get tickets for expired inspection stickers or registrations, but that's for NY plates and the ones I see squatting are usually from out of state

Well then you should start an internet service or something, you'd make fortune.

My advice is to stay on a particular block for 5 minutes or so. I've found that doing so (instead of aimlessly driving around looking for parking and narrowly missing open spots as a result) increases your chances of finding parking. The only question is whether you have the patience to wait out a spot if one is not readily available otherwise?

Ah some true wisdom right here. You are, of course, absolutely right. This is how you should do it especially in a crowded parking lot. Pick a nice perch with a wide view and, wait.

Never try to look for parking right up smack king distance from a train station or bust stop.
Everybody else is thinking the same. Step back a block or two. See the big difference.
Secure your parking spot. Walk to Public Transit. Done
