They were all over Long Island too. I used to go to the ones in Farmingdale and Hicksville. I'm surprised the one in Hicksville went under as it was pretty busy.
I used to shop in the one in Hicksville a lot, but that was a lot of years ago.
This is not the first near death experience for NWL. They had another batch of mass closings. That's when Hicksville, among others, closed. And this was before the explosion in internet retail. This business is likely tenuous and low margin.
I do think I'd rather by cheap Chinese junk from then vs Amazon, because at least I can handle it and see if it decent stuff cheap, or just cheap junk, and I can get immediate gratification. But on-line just has efficiencies that local retail can't beat.

The one I remember (and always thought was the original store) was on Kissena Blvd off Jewel Ave...someone told us about it at work, me and a bunch of 20-something bachelors went there and thought we were in heaven. Practically lived in that place for years after that.
Five; there was also a NWL on Broadway in Greenwich Village across from NYU. It was not far from the HMV music store IIRC. Used to hit that place a lot, now only thing remotely close is K-Mart on Astor Place.
damn I didn't know they went under. I was driving pass the Cross County Mall in Yonkers and saw they had their sign up where they list all the shops and was planning to go this weekend to see if they have any good stainless steel kitchen accessories or chrome / satin nickel bath accessories.
Cross County Mall? That one closed a while ago, when the roof (including the roof top parking deck), collapsed. The building stayed up for a while, so I thought they'd try and fix it. But they recently tore it down. Now I guess it's not coming back.

That location has been closed for like 15 years!
