Hi everyone,
I've been looking to move to Fort Greene and I went to see some apartments in a luxury building--actually three luxury buildings which are all located one after another on myrtle avenue , on the opposite side of the Ingersoll Housing Projects. Obviously, the brokers can not say anything about the safety of the area--- what I'm reading sounds dreadful (shootings, drugs, etc)--yet, these luxury buildings look beautiful, they are not super expensive and right across the street is a great Trader Joes and Target , a movie theatre and the food market, and a subway entance to Dekalb. There's also a very big grocery store on the corner of myrtle avenue and flatbush.

I'm really torn-- on the one hand, the area looked just fine, but I work until about 9pm (12-9 shift) and I'm nervous about walking home alone. I did walk around the area around 8pm and it looked fine and was extremely well lit--perhaps even "over-lit" , but I don't want to make a potentially expensive and stupid mistake.

any ideas??

Don't walk through the projects at night. You'll be fine.

Thank you-- definitely I was not planning to walk through them...just wondered about how much spill-over, if you will, is likely across the street. With 4 luxury rental buildings and one condo building all in a row, I guess, it can't be that bad? Most of these buildings are full.

If they weren't across the street from the projects they'd be super expensive. Any reason you need to be in Fort Greene? I'm sure you can find cheaper elsewhere that isn't across the street from the projects.

that is a very good point shirlmastic.

It doesn't have to be fort greene. I just liked all of the subway lines and being in new-ish buildings (I think these were all built about 3-5 years ago) seemed nice . I don't have a problem with projects per se, it's just that I've read that these particular ones were particularly problematic. There is a community center right next to the projects that looks very well attended, but I just don't know.... There didn't seem to be any problem the night I went by, but who knows if that was a good night??.

My opinion (not based on any solid evidence) is that people who are involved in crime know better than to mess with people in luxury buildings. People who can afford these apartments (and white folks in particular) are likely to receive better "customer service" from the dear old NYPD, which means that those involved in whatever activity would want to avoid going after them and therefore risking scrutiny from the police.

It's after midnight, so I'm not sure if I am making any sense. With that said, I lived down the hall from a drug dealer and felt very safe.

All over the city new luxury buildings are built in front of, one block away, literally next to projects and guess what? 1000's of people are fine living there. This isnt the 90's anymore, dont have to worry about fort greene projects anymore.

There is probably more drugs being done in those high-rises than the projects. Facts!

This!!

100% agree!!

Also with these new luxury buildings if someone in the projects acts up or a big crime goes down the cops will deploy a mobile guard equipped with cameras and floodlights on specific corners. Drug dealers will be pissed because now they will be watched for about 3 months also all activities will be monitored so you best believe everyone in the projects will be pissed at who caused the trouble to bring about the guard tower.
