Horrifying and I am no Luddite. Although privacy issues are mentioned, I saw nothing about potential hackers. When I received my first “fob” that let me in the main door downstairs, I had no idea what it was and almost threw it away until a neighbor saw me and explained what it was. I’m actually okay with those, my current building has one, too. But I am NOT okay with an app to get into my apartment instead of a key. Someone used my credit card at Walmart last weekend 3000 miles away. Luckily, my sharp eyed credit union caught them in time. How on earth would we know it wasn’t me entering my apartment??
There are plenty of times I forget my phone or leave it in the apartment when I go to do things. And there are plenty of times my husband comes home with the dead phone.
I can't forget my keys---because I need to lock my door to leave the apartment.
I wouldn't mind the keypad but the app on the phone? No thanks.

It is not solely just the app. The lock also has a keypad and you can enter a code if you don't want to use an app, it also works with a key card.
I suspect people fighting this have other ulterior motives... like they don't want their LL to know that they are illegally subletting to someone else.
That elder couple in the article are probably just bad with technology and they don't understand how it works/don't want to change their habits.
I would love a keyless entry system for convenience but I'd want a regular physical key as a backup. What's to stop your landlord or building management from locking you out over some petty dispute? A neighbor thinks you're smoking a cigar in your apartment, complains and bam - you are forced to visit the management office before you get back in. No.

Police.
