Big part of what's going on is that a single homicide --- especially a public ,non domestic , homicide can draw the attention of the media.


Back 30 years ago when 10 people were being killed on a typically busy Brooklyn weekend the senses were overwhelmed ---now when the city total is fewer than one a day for all five boroughs they can be seen as the individual tragedies they are.

On the coldest night of this year, a person was shot at midnight outside of one of my companies buildings. The news media was on site, but not make the news. Police say it is a gang hit.

I don't think they have a massive presence or anything, but there are at least some of them. The guy who was killed on the subway platform in Jackson Heights was believed to be a member of 18th street.
