I see lots of people adding it to their laundry and it seems to be a bad idea because of the chlorine irritating one's skin.

I use natural liquid soap, like I have for 20 years now. I also add lavender essential oil.
We have HE washers in our laundry room and are told not to use powders. People still do and clog it. People also add that damn softener and it sometimes still in the soup dish...Which is why I make sure I always pop the soap tray and rise it before washing.

How does the castile soap work in washing machines? I've heard of people using Dr Woods, but never felt it would be as effective as whatever magic ingredients xyz exist in commercial powders and liquids. I've heard of clogging occurring with powders as well.

I see plenty of liquid laundry detergent being sold in stores which means people are still using it. Personally I have been using the liquid detergent ever since moving to NYC as an adult as that is what my paternal grandmother (who lived in the NYC area all her life) used for commercial washers available in her building (which is similar situation to mine). Beforehand I used powdered detergent like my mom.

I believe that using pods are more expensive than liquid detergents if one isn't doing full laundry loads (because one doesn't have a big family) in commercial washers. A few of the people that I know who live in their own homes and have their own washing machines, some of them to do use pods (and prior used powdered detergent).

I'm all about Gain Original (liquid) do they have powder? - but given that it's a shared laundry room and people have pets, I wipe the machines out first with disinfectant wipes AND use Lysol Laundry Sanitizer.

I see mostly liquids. I get aggravated when I open up a front loader's dispenser and I first havwe to dig out the half solid mass of powdered detergent left from the inconsiderate earlier users.

What POSSIBLE advantage do the powders confer?

Some feel that the powder gets the dirt out better because its abrasive.
