I’m trying to figure out if I should live in a Stuy town? Im a single young female and I’m getting mixed reviews from different people. A guy friend lived there four years ago and loved it. A cousin who works in midtown says stay away. The apartment I’m looking at is on 14th and 1st. There’s been recent news on rapes/ sexual assaults in the area this past month. I get that this can Happen anywhere but wanted to get some input. I’m also looking at a place in Gramercy. It is a 6 floor walk up, but if it is a safer area should I go in that direction? Thank you!

I think you need to see how you feel in each area and stay vigilant no matter where you live. If you move somewhere that everyone says is safe but you don't FEEL safe, you are going to be miserable. Crime happens everywhere but if you are specifically just interested in crime stats look at the NYPD website. Click on the stat you are interested in seeing and the map will show you where they happened. https://compstat.nypdonline.org/2e5c...e7c75c/view/89

How do the rents compare? All things being equal I would choose Stuy Town.

I live in Stuy Town. 14th and First is very convenient, if a bit noisy. If I were you, I would rent an apartment in that particular location only if it faces away from the street. You would overlook the new outdoor fitness gym and lots of trees.

There is an Associated supermarket right there and the new Trader Joe’s is going in across 14th street.

As far as safety goes: as in every area, you have to be savvy and aware at all times. In the most recent incident, the young woman was walking alone at 5 am. While I am NOT blaming the victim, and it’s horrible what that criminal did to her, I personally would make other arrangements rather than walk alone, anywhere, at that hour. The streets in general seem to be taken over by miscreants late at night.

And yes, incidents do happen at other times too, but that’s true all over the city.

That said, I love the area around Gramercy Park, although crime happens there too because, and this is a wacky reason, the beautiful “shepherd’s crook” streetlights throw off atmosphere but not a lot of light! This was a couple of years ago, and maybe this has been fixed, although I was over there the other night and the streets still look under lit to me.

If you can hack the stairs and aren’t planning to stay many years in that apartment, that would be a great choice.

Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions.

Thank you for all your input! The rents are the same in both locations, except in Stuy town it’s a flex room with two other girls and Gramercy it’s only with one roommate. The Gramercy location is 3rd ave between 24th and 25th.

Have you looked up the actual city statistics on crime to compare?

Well, I couldn't do a 6th floor walk up, but if you do, you'll be one of the healthiest people around.

Yeah. I was just thinking. No stair master for you!
I know someone who lived in a 6th floor walk up and yeah, she complained but all that walking up and down did wonders for her butt and thighs. I say, if you're young and fit it wouldn't be a problem. No need for the gym!
