The Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced Tuesday that it is getting rid of 400 bus stops in the Bronx, while implementing more frequent bus service and additional lines -- all part of the bus network redesign for the borough.

The agency says there are too many stops that are too close together -- a combination that is leading to bunching and traffic.

According to the MTA, both customers and transit advocates requested more balanced spacing between stops to speed up travel times. The average time it takes for a bus to re-enter traffic from a stop ranges from 20 seconds to more than 1 minute during peak hours.

Bronx stops are currently an average of 882 feet apart – just over three city blocks, while stops in transit systems around the world range from 1,000 to 1,680 feet, according to the MTA. Because of this, under the proposed redesign, stops would be spaced an average of 1,092 feet, resulting in a net reduction of 400 local/limited stops.

However, according to the MTA, NYC Transit must consider other factors such as stop usage, ridership, geography and impact to the community. With this inmind, many retained stops serve high ridership areas such as retirement communities, hospitals or schools for which a stop removal would create a significant burden, the MTA says. Others provide transfers to subway stations or connections to different bus routes, or access to geographically challenging locations where hills would make walking difficult, particularly during inclement weather.

Although the MTA is eliminating these bus stops, other areas are going to get more frequent bus service and added lines as part of the Bronx Bus Network Redesign final plan.

The plan also proposes two new local routes and one new express route, increases service frequency on nine corridors where multiple bus routes share streets, improves crosstown connections, balances stop spacing and streamlines circuitous routes to increase service reliability and intermodal transfers for 675,000 customers throughout the borough.

Makes sense to me. To get from 205th st in Norwood to Gun Hill Rd/Boston Rd roughly, I saw there were 3 routes, all local, and they stopped at all the same stops until branching off much further down their respective lines. I felt like they could be done better, especially with how much time it took. I didn't want to walk down Gun Hill Rd, but I couldn't help but feel like it'd be faster.

I just thought that every block had its own bus stop cause there were so many of them in the BX.

I’m all for it. A lot of the bus stops in the BX don’t make sense. Byford says it’s because they hadn’t been looked at since the trolley days, which the buses replaced

The plan doesn't just talk of eliminating 400 stops. The plan talks of cutting my Express Bus service to Weekday Rush Hour service ONLY. ALL of the Express Buses are getting slashed.

And before anyone says take the subway I DO. I take the subway home because it is closer to my job and quicker. The 167th B stop does not have elevators or escalators. I helped a woman with her stroller up the steps. Would she have been on the Express Bus, probably not.

But the elderly do take the Express Bus and they take it during midday, and on weekends. People work weekends in Midtown too.

This is the Money Taking Agency's way to get the masses ready for a fare hike.

By the way, what you think is 3 city blocks on the Concourse is ONE cross town block in Manhattan. Money Taking Agency wants its riders to walk the length of cross town blocks WITHOUT the high skyscrapers blocking wind to go down stairs to catch a subway.
Ever been on the Concourse on a windy day?

The plan is a slap in the face to Bronx riders.

400 stops is an awful lot of stops to remove too. You mentioned the express buses. They are pretty important because some areas don't have subways or are not accessible for disabled or the elderly. I don't get the impression that too many people on these forums actually depend on buses that much so they may be misinformed about this being a good plan. I can't see how getting rid of 400 stops is a good thing and you mentioning them cutting a lot of express bus service too.

I get the cuts for local stops that are really closely spaced together which should result in better service, but I don't understand the rationale for cutting the frequency of express stops outside of costs.

This is so infuriating, because the bus stops disappear in Manhattan until there are 4-5 blocks between stops. And then the MTA brags that it speeded things up.

Disgraceful. We haven't had Trolleys in nearly ONE HUNDRED YEARS

And these buffoons at city halls ignored this for that long!!!!
