I haven't done this in years - going from midtown Manhattan to the Philly airport. I remember that it's a big thing involving NJ Transit and SEPTA, but I don't remember what to catch where.
Could anyone remind me, preferably being a precise as possible as to where things connect, how much walking is involved, etc.? I have a vague recollection of having to drag luggage a very long way. I can't even remember if I caught NJ transit at Penn or Port Authority or what.
Get to Penn Station and take AMTRAK northeast corridor service to Philly 30th Street Station. At the station take SEPTA Airport Line to Philly International Airport. Very simple.
I haven’t done this in many many years but it used to be NJ Transit to Trenton, cross platform to board SEPTA train, change trains at 30th street in Philly.

If I remember correctly, Amtrak costs a lot more, doesn't it?

Thanks, but I'm hoping for someone who has doe it recently enough so that I can count on things being essentially the same.
Amtrak will cost a ton more. It does get you to philly fast though and without the hassle of having to transfer for the septa in Trenton. The cheapest Amtrak fare is the keystone though because it doesn’t have a cafe car and only runs between New York & Harrisburg (via philly) instead of covering the entire northeast corridor.
That’s going to take forever. Megabus takes two hours and another 45 minutes on septa to the airport. Is there a reason you’re flying out of Philly?

Fare is $45 but seniors can get a 10% discount. Bus ticket from Port Authority to the Greyhound bus depot on Filbert St. is less than $10. Travel time is 2 hours. Taxi fare from Filbert St. to the 30th street station is around $15. You can also walk to the SEPTA Jefferson Station and catch the airport train there.
It used to be that if you arrived in Philly by AMTRAK, SEPTA fares were free on the day of your arrival. I don't know if that is still the case.
I'm not sure why it would be a huge hassle for a New Yorker to have to take one train and then transfer to another. Didn't you ever have to do this with a subway? This is much less complicated, lol. There are only two trains to worry about.
Thousands of people take the NJ Transit Northeast Corridor train from NY Penn to Trenton every day, don't they? (Or at least use that line, obviously not all of them go all the way to Trenton.) It's not a "big thing".
But even without the SEPTA link that I posted, you will see that the connecting SEPTA trains in Trenton are listed right there on the NEC schedule.
I've flown out of Philly once or twice, mostly because they had a direct flight to somewhere that would require a connecting flight(s) if I left from EWR.
