The only way the Knicks will ever be competitive again is if they start tanking for a few year and build off the draft like the way the 76ers did it. You are going to need at least 2-3 losing seasons to start collecting talent and maybe a couple of stars might consider coming here.
As of now the best thing they should do it just blow another season. Wait till next Summer before you hire a new coach. See if you can make something out of Frank N or Knox, otherwise look to unload them if nothings there.
This team has a very long way to go. There is no quick fixes.
tanking for top pick is no sure thing, it's so hit and miss. All these millenial players coming up the draft are one and done, they drop out of college after their first year to enter the draft and they are still raw. They have all this natural talent but huge egos that make them think they're God's gift to basketball that they never bother developing fundamentals and work ethic which immediately gets exposed at the NBA level.
Just look at how many busts the 76ers had with the #1 pick, and even this year with the Pelicans (albeit because Zion can't stay healthy not because of performance) he was considered the biggest thing since LeBron.
The only way to win is to draft smart and with a long term structure. Mavericks found Doncic, Spurs found Kawhi, Curry down the list too. It's all about talent in the front office to find talent for the court

The Knicks are in a way, a microcosm of the City of New York. Has all the financial, location, brand name, large market, etc. advantages but because of never-changing, pisss-poor, incompetent management, always comes up short and fail to live up to all its potential.
In other words, the Knicks represents NYC perfectly.
NBA should try to make it more balance in terms of stars and superstars on a team. A team can have no more than 1 superstar and star on a team or they can have 2 stars on a team.

Very similar to how NYC and MTA are run. Especially after reading the transcript between Fizdale and President.

you mean parity. everyone always yells for parity. But then parity is boring and nobody watches and when you have super teams everyone watches and ratings go through the roof.
Star clusters are great for the league in general, but crappy for local teams who can't get out of the mud
