I could REALLY use some advice on what are some of the best areas to live outside of Manhattan. Our budget is an apartment between $1400-1550.
Any really great areas in NJ?

I don't think anything exists that meets your conditions of 30 minutes out, fun and hip for 1500.Fun and hip is here in the city or BK and you can get a place in bk for 1500 but you probably will not like what you see when you get there. Its time to adjust your conditions. Up the money or forget about fun and hip.

Try Hoboken if you don't mind taking the PATH into the city. Not sure how far your price range will go but I've seen some nice places on craigslist.
Bay ridge is good for that range for sure. Lots of great places to eat, movie theaters nearby, Shore promenade, etc. As for the 30 mins out thing, that might take you to Long Island, but you'd have to research that further. You could prob get something decent in Queens and take the LIRR into the city or drive. Unless you went into the Queens sections that are covered by the 7 train.
In NJ, Hoboken is fun and very close. Jersey City pretty good too, esp around the Exchange Pl and Grove Street PATH stops; Journal Square less so. If you're thinking of something suburban--like houses and yards--consider Montclair, NJ. Nice town, things to do, and about half an hour by bus or train to Manhattan. All these places are expensive: you pay for hipness. Piermont, NY, is great--beautiful spot right on the river. Maybe half hour by bus to the Geo Washington Bridge terminal, but then you still have a significant ride on the A train to central or lower Manhattan. On Long Island, Astoria and L. I. City are pretty good--kinda ugly but lively--and Brooklyn is really the king of cool these days. Excuse me for calling this Long Island--I know that will upset people but it's a geographical fact.
Hoboken might not be in your budget...and you won't get to Long Island in 30 minutes. Check some of the NJ threads, as well as the threads that address Brooklyn and Queens.
Again, no place has everything you're looking for. You're likely going to have to compromise on something.
HA HA -- people still looking for cheap rent in NYC. Amazing, I saw what was being listed for $1,400 in Astoria and they were some of the smallest apartments I ever saw. The living room is smaller than an average master bedroom in most houses.
And Hoboken is great IF you are 25, make $200,000 a year and willing to pay Manhattan prices for a 15 commute to Wall Street.
