The reporter says that she was encountered by "a couple of guys she barely know......accusing her of contacting one of their girlfriends"

I'm gonna go out on the limb and say that while she may not have known the dudes, the victim and the "girlfriends" probably did know each other, and have had some sort of beef, or dispute. And the "girlfriends" wanted to settle the beef by beating her ***, with male backup.
