I am interested in a few apartments in the area. Is this a relatively safe neighborhood for a family?

That block is fairly quiet but all around you there is a lot of drug dealing, drug using, street gangs, loitering, garbage and rat problem. Lots of issues around that area. Check it out at night for yourself. If you're street smart I say go for it if you're a clueless bookworm I'd avoid it. Don't be fooled by the beautiful architecture.

Area is pretty with the architecture and nice it's close to central park. Like LLo said regarding the issues in the area is true. Only its' not quiet in summer, lots of block parties and people bbq-ing on the street. That isn't going to change so if you can't accept that then it's not the area for you. I don't think you need to be street smart to live in the area you just have to accept the social behaviors.

Lol if you're asking, it's not.

4-5 months ago it probably was but the city is regressing in terms of gentrification and crime and all peripheral neighborhoods will regress first.

Too bad. Buildings around there have some of the classiest facades in the city. Honestly for some reason that part of Harlem reminds me of Paris in terms of aesthetics.
