In all honesty the gym is probably more sanitary now then it ever was in normal times. At least at my gym, everybody I notice diligently wipes down their equipment, wears their mask diligently, and stays away from others. That didn't happen in normal times, and there weren't enhanced air filtration systems. Gyms in pre-COVID days were Petri dishes of germs and viruses.
I go to Blink. They were always very good with cleaning. Had wipes, and hand sanitizer. Only change now is the mask wearing.

That's good to hear.
I used to go to a very large, independent gym in Queens with a LOT of people through in any given day. It was split between 90% who were always very good about cleaning up, and 10% who weren't. I don't know if it's a cultural thing or not, but the 'roided up Brazilian dudes there weren't exactly fond of wiping stuff down after they used it.
Now I go to a NYSC in Manhattan, and so far everyone has been very good about keeping to the rules.

I've always wiped down machines before covid. People can be nasty. All it takes is one slob to not clean up after themselves and leave all the machines sweaty.
”People need group workouts to make a living. This ain't about you or me.”
Or...the government could support them so they don't have to risk their lives and the lives of others to make a living. Which is what should have been happening from day one.
Most nyc gyms are pretty gross. Makes my skin crawl. Almost subway level of grossness
I don't know what gyms you have gone to but I've never had a problem with clean gyms. I always see a cleaner on the gym floors. I can count on my hand the thousands of trips I've taking to gyms, the times I haven't seen a cleaner while there.
The governor announced indoor fitness classes will be allowed to start back up again come March 22 at 33% capacity with health screening and contact information required at sign-in.
