What was stupid about it then, if, on the other hand, you claim he should be able to carry that kind of weapon?
I never claimed he should be able to carry that weapon. His actions were stupid considering he did it in one of the most anti gun places in this country.
elnrgby, you claim to know nothing about firearms (and show it too) yet you continue to speak about something you dont know...I dont know what to say.
Many of this forums woke and awakened bright minds have missed the whole point of this story: young black man does something stupid, has interaction with police, listens and obeys and lives another day to tell the story. Wheres this guys blm riot?

All I know is that, if I saw him take out that item, I would not think all was normal, but would head for the exit before he loaded it. I also think the actual whole point of this story was that this was most likely a dangerous situation (and I am certainly not woke :-). An 18 year old whose father has just recently been shot by police travels all the way from OH, enters the NYC subway, and takes out an AK-47 (for which he has ammunition in the backpack). Is he most likely intending to: (a) use time while waiting for the train to clean his rifle, (b) have the AK-47 handy for self-defense because AK-47 is a common, practical weapon for self-defense on NYC subway, (c) make a point that a person has to listen and obey police for his own safety, (d) commit a mass shooting?
The part that the Supreme Court has ruled over and over on that says as long as localities have a system in place for ownership and protection of ones home and business the localities are free to modify the right to carry a firearm publicly.
For the first time in many many years the Supreme Court agreed to look at the nyc permit system in 2019 and drew the same conclusion....they just made a few changes mandatory to it but it is still what it was
The public have no clue about firearms and neither does the media , so they falsely believe when the media uses the term assault weapon that they are referring to fully automatic military weapons instead of something only cosmetically looking like the real deal and does nothing any different than my ruger 10-22 in function , which is usually the first rifle a youngin gets when they are old enough to hunt small game
It's possible this 18 year old forked over a house down payment and went through the process to get a tax stamp just to bring a gun illegally in to NYC, but I guess he's going to lose all of that now, as well as all the other class 3 items he's got.
Another one of those bland gentrifier transplants from Ohio that are turning NYC into kitchy Disneyland, and killing the authentic city vibe? One of those Ohio transplants that so many posters have been harping against?
It is good to see NYPD having some real, functional presence in the subway, though. Long overdue. But imagine if the thing was loaded and ready to go.
And just ponder the fact that someone can think it is legally okay to pull out an automatic weapon in public (subway, no less) if it is only unloaded. Oh, he was just going to use the time while waiting for a train to clean his AK-47. WHERE else in the world could anyone get an idea that this was okay, except in active war zones and in certain places in the US nowadays?
I can't get past the statement that NYC is getting gentrified by people from Ohio.. I don't believe that to be true at all.

No no no no , that was sarcasm, directed at those posters who keep whining that the good old criminal hood is getting all destroyed and gentrified by transplants from Ohio :-). The guy depicted in the OP link certainly does not look as though he came to gentrify NYC with AK-47, plus Cleveland, OH has worse problems with urban blight than NYC, which makes claims that NYC is being gentrified by transplants from over there particularly clueless and idiotic :-).
