A $5 surcharge?! Bah.

https://www.nydailynews.com/new-york...2GIxxWr9G7FP1k

Now that’s a fare hike.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s new physical OMNY fare card — which became available in some retail stores Oct. 1 — will hit straphangers with a $5 surcharge that, at least for now, is non-refundable.

Is the card at least the same physical build as a regular credit card? I would bet people would have paid $5 for a metro card if it would hold up like a regular CC and be permanently reloadable

A regular Metrocard costs $1 which non-refundable. So it isn't surprising they would be charging $5 non refundable for the OMNY card. (Also my laundry room machine refillable card costs a non-refundable $5 fee. So this sounds similar.)

The value of a $5 laundry card is far more reliable and on schedule than the MTA transportation.

The MTA takes forever to roll out this stand-alone OMNY card, then discourages use of the card by adding a $5 fee. I don't like taking out my credit card even on the express bus so I'll pay the $5 and add $$$ to the OMNY card online. We all know the MTA is inept but what's the point here?

London had something similar in 2012 and Tokyo in 2009. NYC is still behind those cities they on to next gen digital cards already.

No surcharge for turnstile jumpers. So they charge others to pay for them.

Wonder if it works like a credit card, where you you loose it or it gets stolen you can report it and it will no longer work.

From https://omny.info/terms-of-service section 9:

Lost, Stolen, or Damaged Card or Device Linked to an OMNY Account. It is important to report any lost, stolen, or damaged OMNY Payment Method to us and, if applicable, the card issuer. You can submit a report to us using one of the methods set out in Section 16. (How to Contact OMNY Customer Service). Once you notify us that your OMNY Payment Method is lost, stolen, or damaged, we will block this OMNY Payment Method from use with the OMNY Fare Payment System. Your OMNY Payment Method may continue to be charged for taps made at OMNY Fare Payment System readers until you notify us that your card is lost, stolen, or damaged.

Section 16:

Quote:
How to Contact OMNY Customer Service. If you have any questions about OMNY, the OMNY Services, or these OMNY Terms of Service, please contact OMNY Customer Service using one of the following methods: (i) via the contact form on our Website: Contact Us, or (ii) by calling (877) 789-OMNY (6669) or 511. Please be aware that your call with OMNY Customer Service may be recorded.

But when you go to 'Contact Us' there is no specific dropdown entry to report a stolen OMNY card.
