Tony Avella’s downfall was joining the Independent Democrat Conference which teamed up with Republicans and voted with them. To suggest Avella was a progressive is ignorant when he was often voting with Republicans. That alliance hurt him with Democrats and that’s why he lost to the ineffective John Liu. Now that he’s been out of office he doesn’t make a good candidate with Dems who remember him caucusing with Republicans and also because he seems to run for any open office.
Listen, I don't think either can save NE Queens or Whitestone in particular. The damage is done. I plan to sell my house within 3 years and then move to Florida or Las Vegas. I'm 50 years old. Whitestone isn't in my future. Queens, in general, is no longer a place for white ethnic immigrants - and their kids. Tony was gonna be more of the same. Let Vicki have her shot.
