NYCHA residents do pay rent. That's a blatant lie that they don't. Fix the topic.
Have you noticed a spike in rents in nyc? It's a true affordability issue for a lot of people especially who do frontline or essential work.
NYCHA residents are tenants, who pay rent and they are 'entitled' to receive building services.
No one said they don't pay rent. They pay a heavily subsidized rent. Th average rent in NYCHA is paltry. 90% of households have an official household income less than 60% AMI.
30% of 60% of AMI. Do the math. 75% of households remain 15+ years with 50% remaining 20 years+. With all the fraud going on in NYCHA, these numbers are surely higher.

In contrast, African-Americans constitute 25% of the city’s households in poverty but 45.5% of households in NYCHA. many lower income people or those who show low incomes in the projects have much higher incomes from either off the books jobs or the under ground economy.
i grew up in a nyc housing project so i witnessed what people did first hand and that was going on decades ago when i lived there .

Of course. I'm not against helping the old, infirm, or those genuinely unable to make a living.or who have fallen on hard times.
The system promotes scammers and parasites.
It's well known that single women get a NYCHA apartment and then their "baby daddy", brother, cousin's, etc. (who are working) live with them. Or older people who live in 2-3 bedroom apartments have family living with them while officially not on the lease.
How about those renting out rooms/apartments?

An ex friend of mine who lived in a luxury building in Chelsea and is like 30 and lives with her parents and pays no rent. Is she a leech too?
NYCHA is an endless drain on NYC Taxpayers, a bottomless pit of money thrown at it for years and years. NYCHA was at first designed to be a stepping stone for the working class of NYC. Start out in a NYCHA apartment and then as your income increases move into a nicer market rate building or buy your own home. I know a few homeowners who started out in the Berry Homes or the big projects in lower Manhattan and later bought nice little houses on SI. That's when NYCHA was for motivated hard working people. Adams is going to have make some hard choices regarding NYCHA. Because at the current rate it will drag down the entire city with it.

A private leech maybe, but not a leech at NYC taxpayers expense.
