I saw an MTA bus speeding on a residential avenue early this morning with the front sign flashing “EMERGENCY” and “CALL POLICE” on the front sign and a smaller sign on the back with “CALL POLICE”. I would have thought it was just a sign error but this bus was on an avenue that doesn’t have bus traffic so I followed it. The bus went into Nassau County and turned north on Lakeville Road. It was speeding and hard to keep up with but I saw it turn left to the entrance road to Long Island Jewish Hospital. I think some buses do enter the grounds of LIJ so I guess the sign was in error. Or maybe he had a crazy passenger on board and took him to the hospital or he had a medical emergency. Is the public really supposed to call 911 if they see the sign flashing?
I saw one of those before as well. The bus driver said it was a malfunction. For mine, the bus was not doing anything unusual.
That is what I would assume but unlike the one you saw, this bus was on a residential road that isn’t a bus route or near one. Something unusual was going on for the driver to be driving on residential streets not near a route and with “CALL POLICE” flashing. I would have done a double take just seeing the bus there even without the sign.
9 out of 10 times its a driver error , I would still call though, but being an Operator I know when I set it off by mistake its not long before a concerned citizen approaches the bus to make sure we are ok .
No because I didn’t have the bus number, it was moving faster than I could keep up so by the time I could call 911 the bus would be long gone, and it went from Queens to Nassau County so which County police should be called? I did follow it in case it stopped or if I could see an emergency in progress, which I didn’t see. It turned into the LIJ entrance which is a bus entrance so at that point it looked like the driver was back on a bus route. Hey give me credit for following the bus for a mile and a half out of my way!

I saw a comment on reddit about the sign and someone said the bus driver can’t turn it off. Is that true?
Yes you can but we don't know its on till someone lets us know it doesn't show from inside
