Hello, I am new to this forum. I am a 33 year old african american female who is moving to Brooklyn in April. I do not have any kids and I will be doing the same kind of work I did in NC. I lived in Bed-Stuy from 1998 to 2002 and worked in Manhattan. My questions is: what areas in BK can I find a studio apartment for $800...that is reasonable and nice. How much money should I bring with me and what areas do you think is best for an african american woman. I moved to BK on a whim before but I decided to move back to make it my home. Please help!!!!!:

I don't know if any of this will help, but I think you might find something in your price range, and in a mixed community in Crown Heights, Prospect Heights, or Flatbush. New York has become so expensive that $800. just doesn't rent much anymore.

I know quite a few people who live in all of these three areas, and one of the posters here was recently talking about both Crown Heights and the Erasmus Hall District (in Flatbush) as really good places to live. If my memory serves me, you'll find apartment houses in all three communities, more in Flatbush perhaps.

All three are on a fairly good subway line into/out of Manhattan.

Good luck and perhaps you can grab a couple of issues of the New York Times and Village Voice to give you an idea of what rents are like.

Talking Craigslist works... at least for me!

Hi there,

I can speak only for me, but I'll tell you I found my Midtown Manhattan $2,100-a-month 2-bedroom-and-backyard apartment in Craigslist. It made me happy! You should at least give it a try.

Sorry to tell you. But you have just been RACIALLY STEERED. How come no one told the African American woman about the "good" qualities of Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst and Dyker Heights? The Hipocracy!!

I didn't steer anyone to neighbourhoods I don't know and don't like. Your insinuations are intolerable!

Get over yourself.

Don't Attack the messenger, attack the message. What problem should anyone on this board have against what I've been posting exactly. The Anti-Racism? Fair Housing? Equal Rights? Justice for all? The persuite of happiness? The right for every American to live wherever they want without being denied that right on the basis of race? In a FREE country, all persons should be FREE to live wherever they want. Please if anyone has a problem with my post about Fair Housing, then maybe they should look in the mirror. I do not tolorate those who find justice and fairness intolerable!

Theanswer, you are a big pain. Stop creating racial issues out of nowhere.

Please?

Now that is a stretch. Out of NOWHERE. Every post I've wriiten was in response to something that was racist. I do not think Im creating something out of nothing. I could not disagree more. All my post was a reply to either someone saying how this place was "Ghetto" or stay away from certain areas because its majorily "Black" or that the Jews and Italians have moved away from these areas, so it's not that "nice" anymore. I've read message after message of someone warning other posters about Brooklyn Heights because it's "Majorily Black" but still nice. There are messages on this board that talk about how there are lots of "shootings" and very dangerouse in "Minority" areas. And yet when I google the news on those same areas, I get nothing. I simply point these things out and I'm the bad guy who is obcess with race

Um.

$800 isn't much, but it might get you a studio/basement apartment in:

Brooklyn:
Kensington
Flatbush (very crowded, busy area though, not for me)
Dyker Heights/Borough Park
Bensonhurst
Sunset (I love this place--brownstones and Mexican/PR/DR food on every block!)
Bay Ridge
Mill Basin (kinda far from the subway, but there're plenty of buses)

Queens:
Astoria/Sunnyside
Ozone Park

They're all relatively safe neighborhoods to me.

I'm guessing you don't want to live in Bed-Stuy again? But it seems lots of people are moving there due to the cheaper rent and its "up-and-coming" [blech] nature. Personally, I prefer a safe, family-oriented neighborhood over some overrated cesspool deemed cool by a bunch of whiny hipsters.

P.S. I, too, was wondering why no one had mentioned the "whiter" neighborhoods of Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst, etc. Shrug. Sometimes I don't think the people giving advice on these forums know the city as well as they think they do.

good luck
