Interesting read from NYP, but something one has noticed for sometime now.

Third ave from about 60's well into 80's has become a stretch of health, beauty, dentistry, veterinary and other related services.

Besides City MD, several more urgent care or health clinics have opened or soon will on Third.

Former Sur la Table retail space is now an upscale dental office.

Remaining half of former Gracious Home space is going to become another urgent care spot. Across the street a brand new luxury vet spot has opened.

It all fits though, UES residents want to look good, care about their health and that of their pets. They also have large enough disposable incomes to make all this happen.

See? Everyone moaning about death of retail and rows of empty stores need to look at larger picture. If area will support something will open up in those vacant spaces.

Nice that stores are being occupied but they are not the kind of places that will support take a walk, stroll along, look at the windows, maybe buy something, stop for lunch lifestyle that keeps streets full and safer.

Medical orientation of that area is not new at all, and medical offices/healthcare retail have always been there, since it is the satellite area of Cornell hospitals in the East 60s and Lenox Hill Hosp in the 70s.

The lower-midtown counterpart of that are the East 30s and 20s around NYU hospitals, Bellevue, some Mount Sinai-affiliated. A lot of the eastern 1/4 of Manhattan, longitudinally, are medical areas.

Interesting article. The massive quantitative easing of the last few years has benefited the UES. This has resulted in massive spending on frivolous pursuits such as cryotherapy and spoiling pets, which doesn't benefit civilization in any way, but is more self indulgence.

We moan about the detail of retail because the replacement is soulless, multinational conglomerates like Amazon that make the world an overall worse place instead of creating a business that can actually support a family.
