As I said earlier, if you feel comfortable there and it's safe enough then go for it. At the end of the day, it's your mortgage payment. As long as you understand that the nicer houses may be more affordable for a reason.
To the OP: What made you think you might not be safe there? Something triggered that possibility in your mind, which led you to ask the question here.
one time when i was walking there in broad daylight near the park a guy came up to me on a bicycle and was trying to talk to me, not sure what he wanted but he gave me a bad vibe. luckily someone was walking their dog and then he left. i mean it sucks cause the space is so good, but now that people are finding body parts all over the place near the house i'm at - i'm obviously reconsidering, but i don't think i'm gonna get as nice of a place for that much money somewhere else..

I live in Cypress Hills. I'm female and white. You will be fine. If you have to come home very late, take a cab/uber from the train, just because there aren't a LOT of pedestrians around at that hour. But I walk home at night from work and it's not a worry. My neighbors are friendly and welcoming, the area is mostly families and older people, and occasionally younger couples are moving in.

Transplants should not give advice on neighborhood safety in NYC. If you have a take a cab/uber from the train if you're coming home late, then the neighborhood isn't safe.
If you had the money to live elsewhere, Cypress Hills wouldn't even make the top 50.
