This is a NYS & NYC issue. Hochul had proposed a heavy-handed statewide takeover of local zoning rules to allow construction of ADUs (Accessory Dwelling Units). More of an issue outside of NYC it still would have impacted numerous quiet safe well-kept city neighborhoods mostly in SI, Queens and the Bronx.

Quote:
Hochul announced around 8 p.m. that her proposal for ADUs, also known as mother-daughter or in-law apartments, would no longer be part of this year’s budget deal, after receiving pushback from most of the state’s Republicans and some members of her own party representing areas with a large proportion of single-family homes.

Translation: Hochul finally figured out that this issue would cost her massive numbers of votes in the all-important suburbs. But Suozzi will still be able to use this against her by saying that Hochul can always revive the proposal if she's re-elected.

And she will. She's already shown her cards.

Posted this in another thread on same subject elsewhere on CD.

Houchl only dropped this ADU thing for now, to get past election in November. Once she wins (and unless something major happens between now and November, she will), the woman will have four years to do what she wants.

Democrat convention this week gave Hochul majority support of party for her bid, and virtually slammed door shut on Suozzi and that Williams guy even getting on ballot. While in theory GOP candidate could win in November, shouldn't get hopes up.

So unless people are going to pack up and move in 2023, it's BOHICA all over but on steroids.

So you'd rather she didn't back down, since you seem to be insulting her for backing down?

Damn straight it will be back, and it'll get passed as part of the NYS budget, so it doesn't require and up and down vote.

If re-elected of course she wouldn't veto it and the press would give her cover.

My point was that anything controversial gets put in the budget, weed, gambling, bail reform...etc.

Think about that, Bail Reform was passed as a budget item...insane

This gives everyone coverage. No up and down votes on anything controversial.

"I was against ADU, but seniors centers need to be funded, and little Johnny needs a new playground so the budget had to be passed."

It's the most weaselly thing about our legislature, and I have no idea how it can be fixed.
