Just curious.

Are there any working man bars left? Type of place where locals go to after work, everyone knows each other and there are some interesting characters in there on daily basis.

I remember there was Legends Bar, in queens Jackson Heights. They had a killer BBQ in the back and the characters at the bar were out of a movie. I went there once a month just to check out people and enjoy great bbq. BBq is no longer there or its operated by another outfit.

Are places like that just gone because the drinks are too expensive? People too busy or what?

Trees Lounge, the movie comes to mind which is a must for anyone who likes off beat, old NY movies.

There are plenty still around. Tough business, as your client base doesn't actually live a healthy lifestyle. And prices are high. It ain't cheap being a daily drinker at a bar. Place where they have really disappeared is out in the 'burbs like LI.

I agree. You cant drink on the cheap in the bar. I am excluding every bar in Manhattan, so lets say Brooklyn and Queens, or surrounding areas. I guess with the rising alcohol prices and strict DUI laws, places like that no longer exist?

Tons on Staten Island. Joyce’s, Flanagan’s, Jimmy Max, Killmeyer’s, all of Forest Avenue pretty much.

South Brooklyn had a few, some closed though. I used to have fun going. Some were dives and had entertaining characters. Boroughs other then Manhattan still have some in quiet residential areas. Most people are friendly. Go a few times and behave and you will be warmly embraced.

Oh Im past that age, too busy with kids and work. Maybe later in life. Just wondering if there are places where were people get together and just talk about topics over a drink.

My friends and I would have a glass of wine at home. Very infrequently went to any bar.

The bars you’re referring to are more of a “past kids” thing anyway. Where I am now, there are a few within almost walking distance. If I’m still here after the shuttling-kids-around-everywhere stage, I’ll be easy to find.

There are plenty of bars that are affordable and have good Happy Hours in Manhattan.
