As God as my witness, I thought turkeys could fly.
Wild turkeys can fly, but only for short distances, as someone else said. I know this because my car almost hit one, but the bird suddenly flew, at a 45 degree angle, sorta like up, up, and away. It then landed almost immediately.
Turkeys once were only seen in SI Zoo late as 1970's, but several factors have lead to their increasing numbers of late. Deer populations have risen as well along with feral cats, and oddly rats.
Growing up I never saw nor heard of rats on SI, am sure they were there, but not like today where almost weekly you hear of some property or area infested with vermin.
Dear, turkeys, rats, etc... one large problem is change of climate. NYC no longer has extended winters with deep cold weather. If we get a few days or nights < 32 degrees F, that's saying something. In absence of hard freezes (including snow), wildlife is free to breed all year, and they do.
LOL. I wonder how nany people recognize this line?
