I've often thought that people used to Manhattan's grid must have an edge on most other people because we develop such an ingrained directional sense of north-south-east-west. It drives me crazy when I'm in other cities, and people look blank when you ask "Is there a north entrance?" or "Is the restaurant east or west of the intersection?"

But then there's this new study:

Keep Getting Lost? Maybe You Grew Up on the Grid.
How Your Sense of Direction Is Shaped

“The environment matters,” said Hugo Spiers, a professor of cognitive neuroscience at University College London and one of the study’s lead authors. “The environment we’re exposed to has a knock-on effect, into the 70s, on cognition.”

I have a TERRIBLE sense of direction.
My brother has the best sense of direction I've ever seen. Our minds work very differently and we're good/bad at different things. I think sense of direction is mostly something you're born with.

No need to install WAZE as smartphones already have a map application installed which one can use for directions.

Waze is great. Gives you heads up on accidents, road debris and cops even.

Often times I might not know the name of the street, but I know very well how to get around and get to my destination.

I didn’t need a thread to tell me that Cida thinks everyone outside of NYC is stupid.

If I’m lost in the woods, I want Yokel Joe next to me, not some androgynous city slicker.

What's so difficult. The Sun rises in the East, tracks along the southern sky (well, maybe not in mid-June), and sets in the West. Except for cloudy days, anyone should be able to find NSEW any time.

Prior to cellphones and GPS, I had a good sense of direction/good navigational skills. Now not so much. I don't store unnecessary info in my brain.

The only valuable navigational tool regarding NYC is knowing how to GET THE HECK OUT of there as quickly as possible!
