Throw them out on their rear ends.
Even the poorest of poor who came to this country generations ago worked their
fingers to the bone without handouts of any sort and still managed to get by.
They watched their pennies and spent frugally knowing that if they didn't
that little bit of money saved would soon disappear.
What in hell were these people thinking?
2 years of free rent and you couldn't at least secure a bank account?
Went out partying and indulging instead? No excuses ....please.
and......if you were broke prior to Covid ........there is no argument.
You were living in a shelter ,in public housing etc... some type of
assistance and you will still continue to be broke afterwards.
The only way to get out from under broke is to work, work, work ,and then
when you come up for air .................work some more............The End.
I wonder how this will end. But if that many tenants are evicted at once, surely, the prices have to drop too somehow because there would be an influx of inventory at once?

maybe , maybe not ....
a lot are likely old un-renovated apartments that are not so desirable .
the new tenant laws make it not lucrative to even renovate anymore.
also it depends how many are original rent stabilized tenants from coop conversions where these will be sold once the tenants are out and not even stay rentals

This will take at least 2 years to get through. All at once? Most of these tenants will get another 1-3 years of 0 rent. The LL will make it up on the other suckers that pay. That's how NYC politicians buy votes.
Majority of these eviction filings are what they always are; nonpayment and tenants seeking to delay or avoid eviction by either running game, and or looking for funds (or something) to pay off back rent.
Yes, there are cases involving harassment and landlords not doing what they should, but that number is no where near half much less majority of cases.
Bottom line is city and state prevented LLs from removing tenants (for various legal reasons) for two years and counting in many instances.
Problem is NY like other liberal, socialist, democrat run states has sized upon covid pandemic to use for their various other purposes including screwing landlords.
I don't even know why anybody rents in the first place, they should all save up and buy a house instead of being a loser renter
If you weren't in Mitchell Lama housing, would you be one of those loser renters?
