"Two buck Chuck" has not existed since at least 2011.
Best Wine store is Mr. Wright on Third Avenue and 89th St. They still sell a few $5.99 wines that are drinkable. The "Chuck" varietals were detestable.
Best deals at Trader Joe's were the cheap PORT wines if that is to your taste.
Best thing about TJ's wine store were the very pleasant cashiers.
they probably lost their liquor license due to selling to underage teens who attend high schools and NYU, in the union square area. got reported, investigated and busted. sweeping it under the rug by closing, and relocating

Could be! the whole liquor license mention in the article was vague and sus , unless you have to get a new license when you move to a new building??

This could definitely be part of it.
Also, with retail stores closing in NYC - specifically Manhattan - reasons almost always related to the very high rent costs to run a store in Manhattan in general.
If sales dip consistently for just a little, operating costs eat bigtime into the profits.
I bet they reopen though in another part of the city--unless TJ's is looking at closing these wine-specific stores in general.
