I have never been to Roosevelt Island although I know plenty of people who live there and have been invited. I should go one of these days. I am intrigued about the place.
When arriving on the F train at the Roosevelt Island station, riders still have a few minutes to go before getting to the surface, since the station is one of the city's deepest, 100 feet below ground level...
I have been there quite a few times. I think it is definitely worthwhile in one direction to take the Roosevelt Island cable car. Also make sure to head to the southern tip of the island to get a view of Queens, Brooklyn & Manhattan at the same time.
At the northern tip is an old lighthouse (if I recall correctly) and there is a new old church somewhere in the central of island (along the main shopping street).
I've been there by bike, bus, train, gondola, and ferry. The island has some attractions to it especially the park at the southern end, but I think my going there that many times is more of a fluke than anything. There are a grove of cherry trees and it's pretty nice when they blossom.
There's a local commercial strip, but it's not at all a shopping destination.
