La Cabra in the East Village. They are a Danish company. We buy from them regularly. Their pastries are amazing as well.

Tiny little place. Don't blink your eyes or you'll miss it.
The coffee is very robust and eye opening..........(all blends).
My opinion.

Yes, it's small but good quality for sure.

I drink a lot of coffee and am always looking for more specialty coffee shops places, both small independent types and small chains.

My favorites in Manhattan are:

La Colombe - Preferably to stay. They are fast, efficient and most of the baristas are all about no nonsense. The Downtown location is a favorite of mine, as is the Bryant Park location.

Da Capo - Upper West Side or Upper East Side

Blue Bottle Coffee

Birch

I've been surprised by Blank Street Coffee as well. Pretty decent considering the lower price.

Seven Grams is generally ok as well.

Given your request, I would avoid Variety Coffee and Culture Espresso. Both offer a more tart, acidic coffee, particularly Culture Espresso. I generally don't take any sugar in my espresso based drinks unless I am drinking straight espresso, but for Culture's drinks I need some.

Broadly speaking this is my goal, to explore a bit. Also, my assistant ordered some putrid K-Cups last week (not her fault, we were all open to K Cups) and I have been getting coffee from the outside. Coffee is not that difficult to make (at home or elsewhere) so I am trying to experiment with brands, locations.

Earlier this week, I ordered this Swedish Coffee:

I'll make some when I'm back in Boston.
