I'm visiting NYC this weekend with friends to see the Christmas lights/displays and do some holiday shopping. The weather looks to be sunny with the lows in the 30s but I know wind can also be a factor. My question is how to dress to stay warm. I have a good down coat but was specifically wondering if fleece lined leggings would keep me warm enough as we are walking around and in/out of stores for both the day time and night time? I am not a fan of layering pants if I don't have to and in general feel like my leggings are warmer than jeans. Thank you!

Wear layers. Nothings worse than being chilled to the bones and only a hot shower will warm you up

The weather doesn't look that cold to me. I think fleece lined leggings sound fine if you're comfortable in those. I personally wouldn't layer anything in addition to pants/jeans , like no thermals under the jeans as you'd start to overheat anywhere inside.

Do you have boots that at least go up to the calf or even higher?

Your outfit sounds fine. Remember gloves and a hat.

Also check the map for UNIQLO and Old Navy stores. If you're cold, you can always go in one of those and buy some warm stuff for cheap (esp. warm stuff at Uniqlo)

There is no need to wear layers if you invest in a quality coat, hat and lined gloves. Do your legs get cold? I find regular pants to be fine for me. I hate hats so I never wear one, but I've also lived in cold climates off and on near Montréal, so I'm used to the cold and have a quality Canadian made parka. I have one now that is over 10 years old, but it is only worn probably five times a year when the temps are in the 20s and looks brand new. I will wear it tomorrow running errands. Coat was about $500 years ago and now costs over $1,000, but it's worth it. Avoid H & M and those other cheap sweatshop places and buy yourself quality made items and you'll be fine.
