I used 30% less of natural gas to heat
my home this month compared to last year
but my bill tripled in price. What the heck is going on?
Something is not right. For the 01/2023 billing period I used -4.08% less gas compared to 01/2022 and my bill went up 15.96% which makes sense considering increased energy costs. Sounds like your heating system needs to be checked out.
I am researching areas out of New York to retire. What I've been finding is that in almost every other city/state the rents are just as high as New York. I just wonder how people can afford $2500 - $5,000 a month when, most likely, salaries elsewhere aren't nearly as high as in New York.

You answered your own question in same paragraph.
Large part of those fleeing NYC/NYS are retirees and others who have already made their money. They are now seeking ways to make things go further.
You are also forgetting tax burden outside of NYC tristate area along with other cost of living is usually less.
Rents are high across nation atm for several reasons including would be home buyers being shut out of market. As mortgage rates come down and supply of available homes increases look to those persons to start switching from renting to owning. That will lessen demand and rents will begin decreasing.
Key to moving out of NYC to say the south or south west is to have made your "New York money" first, then take it with you.
On top of this add the whole new wrinkle of WFH and telecommuting.
Finally many who move out of NYC aren't seeking to rent, but buy a home or condo.
I'd like to move out but job opportunities aren't as plentiful.
That's pretty silly given your constant kvetching about living here as it's not like you need more than one job, or a few at the most, at a time. Are you tired of nyc life or just tired of living in general?

I'm actively looking for jobs outside NYC but it's not easy. My field is wall St finance.
This is absolutely why we left. My wife does work in NJ (she always did), but besides that our whole lives still revolve around Staten Island. When we started to look, NJ hit the radar immediately and soon became a no-brainer.
We were looking at spending close to $700k in SI. In the neighborhoods we would accept, this meant attached houses only. Every single house we looked at in NJ was over 2200 sq ft, huge yard, nice blocks, DETACHED, and well under $600k. Ended up spending $419k for a 180x50 yard, 2 car garage, almost 2500 sq ft, 4BR/2B house in a moderately taxed town less than 10 min from Staten Island. My backyard “neighbor” is woods. No brainer.
