NYC crime-wise is not as bad as the media portrays it. If you have street marts, you will do OK in NYC and any major city that you go travel to.

Jesus, you are dense. In a city with a large population of different races, cultures, religions, traditions, class, etc you will have crime.
Congratulations NYC you are doing an excellent job of chasing people away. We have 3 groups of friends that don't know each other and are from South America. They saved and saved for a vacation in NYC. They uniformly hated it, it was dirty, unsafe, strange people on the street, outrageous prices etc. These are well educated professional people that are used to living in a unsafe city (Bogota) and were horrified at what NYC has become. Keep up the good work NYC.
Well, it's always been expensive, always been dirty, and always had strange people. Statistically, it's not unsafe, though.
Next time, they can try Naperville, Illinois. That's supposed to be safe. It's probably cheaper than NYC, too.
