Not done deal yet, but if certain persons in Albany get their way this year's budget will contain a few new taxes to fund the always hard up MTA.

One is an 8% tax (4% state, other 4% local) tax on *all* streaming and digital services.

Other is a 4% tax on nearly all delivery services with a few exclusions.

Has nothing to do with the MTA. They're just using it as a convenient excuse for PR. The city is hard up for money because projections have the city facing a nearly $5billion budget deficit (officially which means the issue is bigger than that). They trying to come up with any way to raise money to continue their welfare state (and stay in power).

They're scared to increase income taxes because they realize it's extremely unpopular and it only forces more high earners out of the state. So what they do is come up with stealth taxes (mainly on the middle class) that aren't obvious to most voters.

I predicted this years ago and we'll see more and more of it over the next few years as the budget issue becomes more acute. The politicians in this city are incapable of spending less. Their entire political philosophy is made up of expanding the welfare state to maintain power.

Even a blind man can see.
The intention is to get the middle class on to the welfare system and eventually win the Democratic vote.

Nothing bad can happen from getting rid of TV. Nothing but good actually.
God forbid, perhaps people will read books, hike and socialize and avoid toxic TV.

Who said this scheme is restricted to television only?

Only saw "streaming" which could include anything from desktop, laptop or any other device. Tax would hit whoever provides service same as any other utility bill.
