I am flying out of JFK this coming Sunday, 4/23/23, and was just alerted by the airline that part of Highway 678 will be closed this entire weekend. Does anybody know what the best alternate route would be? And how much extra time I should allow for this? I'll be driving from Connecticut.

Do you have TSA Precheck? If no, then try to be at the airport 2 to 3 hours before your flight starts boarding. (3 to 4 for International flights)

Use Waze.

Coming from CT, you can take Cross-Bronx Expy -> Throgs Neck bridge > Cross Island Parkway South, all the way to Belt Parkway west which will bring you to the airport. This route avoids Van Wyck ( Rt 678) entirely.

Been out in Vegas all week looking at condos. What a s-hole NYC highways are compared to the rest of the country. They are such a pleasure to drive. Haven't seen one pothole in 4 days.

Does anyone born in Queens refer to it as Highway 678?

No.

And to the ditzy broad who reports traffic on 1010WINS it's pronounced Van Wick not Van Wike.
